Wilhelmina and Willard Triumph over the Big Writing Obstacle is a delightful book to help children gain confidence with state performance writing. It can also be used for professional development with teachers or to re-enforce best practices with teaching writing for intermediate students. State Writing Rubric concepts are embedded in text. The main characters, Wilhelmina and Willard are energetic 5th grade twins at Odelya Preparatory School, who sort out everything together: same friends, equal favorites, and identical dislikes. They even score the same in content classes like math and reading, except one, writing. Wilhelmina is a wonderful essayist. However, Willard does not show much promise. With the help of their teacher and school principal, Mr. Obadiah Oliver, suggesting, “The more you read, the more you can write. Use inspiration from a story to prompt discussion, drafting, and formulizing thoughts for writing,” and over the progression of a few weeks, that’s just what they did together. This book is 5 of 6 in Dr. Ingrid Mitchell’s Overcoming Obstacles Reading Series for Children.
